What is Orthotics
Orthotics is based on studying body movement and function, sometimes referred
to as biomechanics. Orthotists are specially trained during a four year degree
program to be experts in the correct alignment and movement of the whole body.
They specialise in improving function and decreasing the pain of patient’s
who experience any number of the huge range of problems affecting the body, be
they related to injury, old age or congenital abnormality.
Orthotists often prescribe the use of specialist devices to aid the treatment of bone and muscle problems throughout the body.
The aim of orthotic treatment is to:
- Support a part of the body. e.g. knee bracing for weak knees
- Reposition a part of the body in order to correct misalignment. e.g. custom made insoles
- Accommodate deformity by using specially made supports and footwear
